The Mountains of New Mexico

Enjoyed the fall colors while hiking!

Recently had the opportunity to return to New Mexico. It’s been 15 years since I worked at a resort in the Otero mountains, drawing inspiration from the geography and people. Being a guest rather than an employee was interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed hiking, eating way too much, and getting to hang out with some wonderful people.

After watching the trailer for Max’s upcoming release of Salem’s Lot, I picked up the book and am reading it for the first time. Really enjoyed the opening act. Having grown up in a small town, I understand some of what Stephen King was trying to get across to readers. My hometown had its fair share of secrets and scandals, but at least it wasn’t the cesspool I imagine Jerusalem’s Lot to be (though I may be biased).

I did drive through several modern-day examples on the way to/from New Mexico, though. Lot of small towns in western Texas that verge on abandoned. Only the slightest signs of life. They’re the kinds of places one might disappear in.
